The kick off at Red Pheasant was very gratifying. It is a very small community and we hope they enjoyed the presentations that the community host had planned out for them.
The first day of the long week event started off actually the night before at the Sweetgrass Reserve, at a long night of rounddancing and jigging.
The first day of the Addictions Awareness week actually kicked off with a Tobacco Pipe Ceremony. And then once the flags of every province went up, a WWII veteran from the Red Pheasant reserve came up to talk about the importance of a healthy nation, but not before there was a drumming song dedicated to the flags.
The pancake breakfast was exactly what we needed to have that energy to go out in the prairie cold and fresh snow for our proud sober walk. The cold was minor in comparison to the importance of the walk.
The “letting go” ceremony consists of letting go of balloons to represent the spirits of all those who have left us due to addictions. Everyone let go of a balloon and the winds took them south.
This day was full of games, all for the kids and the adults. The pow-wow dancing musical chairs with drumming was great.
To see everyone fight for the chairs was quite funny. Other games included sitting on balloons to pop them and lots of running around! Everyone was prized with a fun award. To see children with big smiles and laughter along with adults acting like children was exactly what a day without addiction was supposed to be like. Healthy fun.
Before everyone left to get the supper prepared for later that evening, we were visited by some horses and a wagon.
The night brought about excellent presentations by comedian Derric Starlight
and by the hypnotist JR Matthew. Both brought a night of laughter and amazement and were great additions to the first day of the week that was coming to an end.
As for a Kick-Off, this was really fun and packed with great entertainment all day long. The rest of the week has visits to the school by some presenters from the Cross Cancer Society, so they stil have a more to come! As far as visitors, the Red Pheasant community got to meet Nechi’s CEO who seemed very much to have enjoyed her time there, she even got hypnotized for a little while, but the hypnotist couldn’t hold her will long enough! Another special visitor was a representative from the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, from Ottawa. She came second playing musical chairs, so we know she had a great time too. The community all laughed hard with the activities and the kids all walked around with smiles so we know it was a very successful day, and a great way to kick off the week.
While we are in Red Pheasant, and you are all in your communities celebrating this beautiful week of sober and healthy lifestyles.
We really urge you all to take pictures and send us your best ones! We would love to see pictures that portray activities and also the walks! Please send pictures of the walks!
(please note that we might use the pictures in public publications)
